Alpine Skiing at 2018 Winter Olympics – Women's Giant Slalom

evolution of skis

Alpine skiing involves speed, agility and descending hills. It is a sport that is popular worldwide. There are six disciplines, including downhill, slalom and giant slalom. The sport dates back to the 19th century. It has since become an Olympic event, especially with the advent of the winter Olympics.

Mikaela Schiffrin has won her third world championship in the women’s downhill. She is now ranked second in all-time wins behind Austrian Annemarie Moer-Proell who won six titles during the 1970s.

The results of today's race were a bit different than expected, with a number of first-time finalists and many of the top competitors finishing in the lower part of the pack. Corinne Suter, the Swiss skier, won her first ever gold medal after winning a silver last year.

Flury's victory was a surprise, as she had only one previous top-10 finish in 10 races at both the World Cup and Olympic level. Sofia Goggia of Italy, widely considered to be the favorite, was beaten by Flury.

She held a 1.12 second lead until the fourth run of the race when she slipped into second. She stayed in second place and didn't drop a single second until her final run.

Sofia Goggia from Austria lost her position after skidding through a barrier. Nina Ortlieb, the Swiss pre-race favorite, was disqualified. The rest of the field had a good run, and were able to win their first World Cup Downhill medals.

Brignone finished third with a time of 2:21, just 0.12 seconds behind her teammate and the defending World Cup champion, and Norway's Ragnhild Mowinckel, who started the day in fifth place, had an excellent race to earn a bronze. Brignone also moved up to second place in the World Cup standings.

Weather conditions shortened the race, and a second run was cancelled due to snow. Lara Gut-Behrami, with a time 1:39.43, was in the lead after the first race.

Viktoria Rebensburg from Sweden placed sixth overall with a timing of 1:40.50. She finished ahead of Sweden’s Ilka Stuhec and France’s Tessa Worley.

Even though the race was shortened, it was still the final race in the alpine world championships. Three weeks of racing made this a big event, and emotions were running high.

The world championships have been a huge success, both for the athletes as well as the countries. The medal count was a record for the women's division, and a total of 80 nations participated. A record number of 320 quota spots were allowed in the giant slalom and slalom events, giving each nation four skiers to compete for a medal.
